Logitech G Pro X 60 review: whats up fellow kids

design keyboard

The Salmon switches are not in a very good condition (they would require cleaning at least), but the orange ones are. I also have 2 sets of AEK keys, one in Japanese and the other one in ANSI layout (qwerty US). At the time of writing, I have validated the PCB rev0, almost finished designing the case and plate, but the keyboard itself is yet not finished. My aim is to allow anyone to also start designing their own keyboards, piece by piece, but also understand how everything works. This way, I would be able to have the layout I want, instead of being forced in a 60% layout I’m not really fond of. KiCAD typically uses a "Project" structure to organize files.

A five-pin PCB will take a two-pin switch, but not the other way around, for obvious reasons. If the PCB is hot-swap-capable like the one we're using, you just plug the switches in by lining up the pins and pressing into place. A solder-able PCB, meanwhile, would require soldering the switches down from the underside of the PCB (with the PCB removed from the frame, of course) to ensure signals are recognized.

It’s the most economical process for producing high volumes of plastic parts. Learn about the different types of keycap materials, shapes and manufacturers.

The two most common are known as double-shot and dye-sublimation. Double-shot caps are typically more durable but cost more to produce — they’re made by molding one color of plastic for the keycap around a second color of plastic for the legend. “Dye-sub” caps, in contrast, use heat to stain in the legends but are decently durable in their own right. The smallest popular layout is the 60 percent keyboard, which removes the arrow keys, function row, numpad and navigation cluster. This kind of design can be particularly useful for gaming, as it opens up a ton of desk space to swing your mouse around. It typically relies on shortcuts to make up for its missing keys, but it comes with a learning curve as a result.

When installing the switches into the PCB it’s really easy for the pins to bend. In which case, you’ll need to re-straighten them with tweezers and retry. You need to press the switches into the plate and allow the pins to enter the PCB. For the type of lube, 205g0 is a great all-around lube for linear and tactile switches.

The Z-Rope is perfect for on-the-go workouts but also for compact homes where storing gym equipment becomes a bit of a hassle. Measuring just 19 inches long and weighing 900 grams (1.9 pounds), the Z-Rope unlocks a healthy lifestyle without the size, price, and commitment of a Peloton. The Z-Rope starts at just $144 and begins shipping as soon as May 2024. Would I recommend it to a competitive player with the time and inclination to set it up properly? Maybe I’ve been spoilt by magnetic switches in the last few months, but there’s only very slightly noticeable drag to the debounce of each key compared to something like the Endgame Gear KB65HE. It’s not likely to be something that interferes with accuracy or speed in more casual settings (actual recorded responses felt instantaneous), but could be off-putting when milliseconds matter.

For someone starting out, we recommend Gateron Yellow switches as they are affordable and super smooth. You can also choose the color of the plate if you want a certain aesthetic to your keyboard. With a flexible plate there is more bounce when typing which can feel nice to some. These are a great option if you’re willing to pay a little more than plastic and want a heavy and solid keyboard. When a switch is pressed, the metal plates touch and it sends the message to the computer that the keystroke was registered.

We often team up with designers to offer keyboards in multiple layouts. Once the keycaps have been added, your build is now complete. Most of the time it just involves screwing the PCB into the case, but your keyboard should come with some basic instructions for the assembly process.

The linear, pre-lubed Kailh Box Plastic switches in our unit are smooth and enjoyably clacky, while the larger keys are neither hollow nor overly loud. All of the switches are hot-swappable, and the whole thing works over USB-C, Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz dongle. Alas, its ABS keycaps start to feel slicker and greasier with extended use. This model also has a 90 percent layout, which saves a little extra desk space compared to a 96 percent board but can lead to more accidental presses around the arrow keys. Your choice of switch will be the most impactful to your typing experience, so spend some time considering what you like most.

Also, a number of YouTube channels have made an entire business of showing off keyboard builds. Some of our favorites include Hipyo Tech, which reviews a wide variety of keyboards, and Chyrosran22, which does reviews and the occasional switch teardown in a satisfyingly cinematic style. For larger keys, give an extra push where the keycap connects to the stabilizer stems to ensure it sits evenly. You’ll notice cut-outs for each stabilizer housing and a line long enough to fit the wire. Slide the wire into this slot until each housing slots into the proper cut-out. Finally, add a layer of semi-thick dielectric grease to both bent ends of the wire for that stabilizer going about a 1cm past the 90-degree bend.

This means the circuit will have ESD protection on the data lines and power surge protection on the Vcc. It’s a similar story with the Lofree Flow, a low-profile model. Its full-POM switches are softer and noticeably quieter than the NuPhy Air V2, and its thin aluminum case looks and feels high-quality. It can only work wirelessly using Bluetooth, though, and we noticed a couple of connection hiccups in testing. There’s still no software, either, plus its backlight is fairly weak.
